Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

    Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling and Storage Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the SIR. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  2. Rotate the steering wheel one half turn to the right to access the steering wheel inflator module screws.

  3. Remove the screws from the back of the steering wheel inflator module using a TORX® driver.
  4. Remove the steering wheel inflator module (1) from the steering wheel (3).
  5. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) from the electrical connector on the steering wheel inflator module.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the steering wheel inflator module.
  7. Disconnect the horn ground lead from the steering wheel.
  8. Rotate the horn contact lead counterclockwise ¼ turn in order to remove the horn contact lead from the steering column shaft tower.
  9. Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required retention period. Refer to Inflator Module Handling and Scrapping .

Installation Procedure

  1. Rotate the steering wheel ½ turn to the left in order to center the steering wheel.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the screws to the back of the steering wheel inflator module (1) using a TORX® driver.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  5. Rotate the horn contact lead clockwise ¼ turn in order to install the horn contact lead to the steering column shaft tower.
  6. Connect the horn ground lead to the steering wheel.
  7. Connect the electrical connector to the back of the steering wheel inflator module.
  8. Install the connector position assurance (CPA) to the steering wheel inflator module.
  9. Position the screws in the steering wheel inflator module to the retaining holes on the steering wheel.
  10. Install the inflator module to the steering wheel by firmly pressing the module into place until fully seated.
  11. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
