Subject:Change Oil Soon Message On After ECM Replacement/Reprogramming

Models:2005 Chevrolet Cobalt
2005 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada Only)



The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Change Oil Soon Message in the Driver Information Center (DIC) is on after the ECM was replaced or reprogrammed for any reason. We have investigated this concern and identified the root cause to be corrupted calibration files.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Please do NOT replace the ECM for this condition as it will not resolve this issue, instead perform the following steps.

Message on after reprogramming the current ECM with a new calibration. (Example: Fuel gauge recalibration)

  1. Make sure the ECM has one of the following calibrations installed.
  2. (12600882, 12600883, 12600884, and 12600885)

  3. If so then reset the oil life percentage with the Tech 2 in the following menus Diagnostics " (5) 2005 " Passenger Car " (1) Chevrolet " A " Engine " (1) Chevrolet " A " Engine Controls " (F) 2.2L L4 L61 " Module Setup " Engine Control Module " Oil Life Reset.
  4. Cycle key and recheck for Change Oil message and that the oil level percentage is 100%

Message on after Replacing the ECM with a NEW one.

  1. Make sure the ECM has one of the following calibrations installed.
  2. (12600882, 12600883, 12600884, and 12600885)

  3. If so then cycle the key 2-3 times with a 10 second power off time and retest.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
