2004-2007 GMC Canyon Pick Up

This PI is being updated to include additional areas of chafed harnesses under step one. Please discard PIT3048C.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Dome light stays on or the door ajar message is illuminated. The BCM monitors all the door switch inputs by two separate inputs to the BCM. The drivers door is monitored by circuit 745. The other input includes 3 circuits( 746, 747 and 748 ) wired in a parallel circuit for all the passenger doors. These circuits signal the BCM by pulling the reference voltage supplied by the BCM low when a door is opened.

Recommendation/Instructions:

There are 3 common places to inspect.

  1. There are several areas to inspect for chafed harness. Look for circuit 1732 Orange (OG) wire or circuit 156 White (WH) wire for a chafe
  2. • Inspect for chafed harness were the sun visor secures to the roof. Inspect both drivers and passenger side visors.
    • Inspect for chaffed harness were the assist handles secure to the roof.
    • Inspect for chafed harness near the sunroof (If equipped RPO CF5). This could be anywhere around the perimeter of the roof.
    • Inspected for a chafed harness concern at the rear seat floor pan bolts.
  3. Inspect the left rear door jamb switch. Adjust the door or shim the door jamb switch so the switch opens and closes with the door. Again this seems to be most common with the left rear door.
  4. If the above areas are inspected with no concerns, continue with a diagnostic path listed below. To isolate this concern. Monitor the Tech 2 BCM data display, inputs in the BCM. The Tech 2 will only show passenger door ajar switch. This is for all passenger doors (rf, rr, lr) as all circuits are connected inside the BCM. Attempt to isolate if the concern is with the drivers door or one of the passenger doors. Once isolated, inspect the ajar switch for the door in question. Some reports have been noted that the switch is not being depressed enough when the door is closed resulting in a door ajar message or interior light staying on. Inspect the door ajar switch mechanical operation, if the door ajar switch is mechanically operating correctly with the door, suspect circuits 745, 746, 747 or 748 is shorted to ground.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
