Tools Required

1. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
2. Remove the tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
3. If necessary, remove the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
4. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement .



5. Remove and discard the steering shaft lock plate retaining ring using compressor J 38364 and adapter J 42137 .



6. Remove the following parts from the steering column shaft:

6.1.	The steering shaft upper bearing retainer

6.2.	The steering shaft upper bearing spring

6.3.	The steering shaft upper bearing




7. Remove the steering column pivot pins (1) using remover J 21854-01 .



8. Pull the tilt lever in order to disengage the lock shoes from the dowel pins (2) in the steering column housing support.



9. Remove the steering column tilt head housing (1) from the steering column.

1. Install the steering column tilt head housing (1) to the steering column.



2. Using the tilt lever, position the lock shoes to the dowel pins (2).
3. Rotate the steering column tilt head housing (1) in order to align the holes for the steering column pivot pins.



4. Install the new steering column pivot pins by performing the following steps:

4.1.	Lubricate the steering column pivot pins (1) with, GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).

4.2.	Press the steering column pivot pins (1) until they are firmly seated.

4.3.	Stake the steering column pivot pins (1) at 3 locations each.




5. Install the following parts to the steering column shaft:

5.1.	The steering shaft upper bearing

5.2.	The steering shaft upper bearing spring

5.3.	The steering shaft upper bearing retainer




6. Install a new steering shaft lock plate retaining ring using compressor J 38364 and adapter J 42137 .

Firmly seat the new steering shaft lock plate retaining ring into the groove on the steering column shaft.

7. Install the ignition lock cylinder case. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Case Replacement .
8. If necessary, install the linear shift assembly. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
9. Install the tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
10. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
