When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

Squeak noise from lower steering column when turning. Noise is coming from the lower bearing boot.

Recommendation/Instructions:

  1. Loosen the 2 retaining nuts at the lower bearing bracket or intermediate shaft assembly bracket.
  2. Wiggle the lower shaft to unseat from the cowl.
  3. Retorque the lower column bearing bracket. Torque the right side nut/bolt first and then the left side.

Note: Engineering has found that torqueing the bracket right side first has corrected this concern. Replacing the Intermediate shaft or lower bearing bracket will not correct this concern.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
