The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

A vehicle may arrive with a concern of premature rear drum wear. There are two possible concerns that can lead up to this concern.

  1. Park Brake Cable Bind.
  2. Excessive dust and/or dirt enters the rear drums in rural areas or when used in off road applications.

Recommendation/Instructions:
  1. Perform the following inspections/procedures before moving to step two:
    2. • A. Inspect the park brake pedal assembly. Make sure the park pedal applies and releases correctly with no signs of cable binding.
    • B. At the park brake pedal assembly, a zip tie may have been used to aid in the installation of the park brake pedal and front park brake cable assembly. This zip tie may still be attached to the front park brake cable and the pedal assembly. If the zip tie was left attached during assembly, it can cause the rear park brake cable to bind and keep the rear brake slightly applied after the park brake is released. If a zip tie is found, remove the zip tie from the park brake pedal/cable area at the drivers left lower A-pillar and re-evaluate park brake operation.
    • C. Inspect parking brake cable operation. Follow the park brake cable from the park brake pedal assembly to the rear drums. Inspect for binding, cuts or abrasions on the housing of the cable that would allow water or debris to enter and create a park brake cable binding situation. Replace cable(s) as needed.
  2. If excessive dirt is found in the rear drums, question the customers driving habits and use. If the excessive dirt was found due to driving in rural areas or off road applications, the customer will need to service the brakes more frequently than a customer that does not drive in this manner. No change to the braking system is expected.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
