This PI was superceded to update Recommendation/Instructions. Please discard PIT4459.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that the vehicle has poor or no Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) range at times especially when exiting the vehicle after turning the engine off. When the vehicle is turned off, sometimes the ONSTAR module does not go to sleep quick enough and the RKE performance may be negatively affected. The OnStar module may be giving off EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) that is near the same frequency as the RKE transmitter. The routing of the RKE antenna may be to close to the OnStar module causing the receiver in the BCM to not receive the RKE transmitter signal.

Recommendation/Instructions:

While duplicating the concern, remove the 10amp OnStar fuse from the UBEC and attempt to duplicate again. With the fuse removed, the RKE functions should work with no intermittent operation or range issues. If the complaint is still duplicated with the OnStar fuse removed, then the following procedure is not needed.

Re-route the antenna away from the Onstar Module per the photos below. Follow steps A through D below so the antenna is mounted and secured to the IP brace behind the right HVAC deflector.

A - Access the BCM antenna connector and trace the antenna wire and loosen from its existing position. Inspecting the following:

B - Starting from the BCM, route the antenna wire to avoid damage and snap the RKE antenna into the hole on the passenger knee bolster bracket. (See Illustration below)

C - Next, route the wire and secure the RKE antenna to IP frame with tape (See Illustration below)

D - Finally, snap the RKE antenna into the hole near outer HVAC vent. (See Illustration below)

3. Be sure the antenna connector is fully seated into the BCM.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
