Exhaust Muffler Replacement With LLV or LLR
Removal Procedure
Warning: Refer to Exhaust Service Warning in the Preface section.
Warning: Refer to Protective Goggles and Glove Warning in the Preface section.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
Note: Use care not to over extend the rear brake hose.
- Complete the following in order to gain clearance to remove the muffler:
2.1. | Remove the lower shock absorber nuts (9) and bolts (8). |
2.2. | Remove the right rear leaf spring nut (2) and bolt (1). |
2.3. | Wedge a block of wood (5) between the frame (4) and the rear axle (6). |
Caution: Do not over-flex or damage the flex joint when moving the flex joint from the normal mounting position.
- Remove the nuts securing the muffler to the catalytic converter.
Note: Do not use oil base lubricants.
- Apply a soapy solution to the exhaust pipe hanger rods (3) in order to ease the removal of the exhaust hangers (1).
- Pry the exhaust hangers (1) free from the exhaust pipe hanger rods (3).
- Complete the following in order to remove the muffler from the vehicle:
6.1. | Slide the muffler rearward from the catalytic converter. |
6.2. | Rotate the muffler 90 degrees counterclockwise from the rear. |
6.3. | Carefully remove the muffler rearward from the vehicle. |
Installation Procedure
Caution: Do not over-flex or damage the flex joint when moving the flex joint from the normal mounting position.
- Complete the following in order to install the muffler to the vehicle:
1.1. | With the muffler turned 90 degrees counterclockwise from the rear, carefully insert the muffler over the rear axle until the flange is near the catalytic converter. |
1.2. | Rotate the muffler clockwise 90 degrees to the installed position. |
1.3. | Slide the muffler forward into position, aligning the studs with the rear of the catalytic converter. |
Note: Do not use oil base lubricants.
- Apply a soapy solution to the following in order to ease the installation of the hangers (1):
• | The inner diameter of the exhaust pipe hanger (1) |
• | The exhaust pipe hanger rod (3) |
- Press the exhaust pipe hangers (1) over the exhaust pipe hanger rods (3).
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the nuts securing the muffler to the catalytic converter and tighten in the following sequence.
4.1. | Tighten the muffler nuts by hand until each contacts the metal flange. |
4.2. | Tighten the muffler nuts to
45 N·m (33 lb ft). |
- Remove the block of wood (5) from between the frame (4) and rear axle (6).
- Install the right rear leaf spring bolt (1) and nut (2) and tighten to
85 N·m (63 lb ft).
- Install the lower shock absorber bolts (8) and nuts (9) and tighten to
95 N·m (70 lb ft).
- Inspect the exhaust system for leaks and underbody contact.
- Lower the vehicle.
Exhaust Muffler Replacement LH8
Removal Procedure
Warning: Refer to Exhaust Service Warning in the Preface section.
Warning: Refer to Protective Goggles and Glove Warning in the Preface section.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
- Remove the spair tire, Refer to
Spare Tire Carrier Replacement.
Note: Use care not to over extend the rear brake hose.
- Complete the following in order to gain clearance to remove the muffler:
3.1. | Remove the lower shock absorber nuts (9) and bolts (8). |
3.2. | Remove the rear axle vent tube from the body. |
3.3. | Unfasten the brake lines from the rear axle. Do not open the connections. |
3.4. | Place a jack stand under the rear axle. |
3.5. | Remove both rearward spring shackle bolts and nuts. |
3.6. | Remove the propeller shaft center support bearing bolts. |
3.7. | Remove the heat shield located above the muffler assembly to converter y pipe. |
| Note: only drop the axle enough to gain clearance.

3.8. | Lower the rear axle to allow the exhaust system clearance. |
- Remove the catalytic converter nuts (1).
- Loosen the front exhaust muffler pipe at the catalytic converter clamp (2).
- Separate the front exhaust muffler pipe hanger from the insulator.
- Separate the front exhaust muffler pipe from the catalytic converters.
Note: Do not use oil base lubricants.
- Apply a soapy solution to the exhaust pipe hanger rods (3) in order to ease the removal of the exhaust hangers (1).
- Pry the exhaust hangers (1) free from the exhaust pipe hanger rods (3).
- Complete the following in order to remove the muffler from the vehicle:
| Note: It may be necessary to rotate the Muffler in order to gain clearance.

10.1. | Slide the muffler rearward from the catalytic converter. |
10.2. | Carefully remove the muffler rearward from the vehicle. |
Installation Procedure
- Complete the following in order to install the muffler to the vehicle:
| Note: It may be necessary to rotate the Muffler in order to gain clearance.

1.1. | Carefully insert the muffler over the rear axle until the Y flange is near the catalytic converter. |
1.2. | Slide the muffler forward into position, aligning the studs with the rear of the catalytic converter. |
Note: Do not use oil base lubricants.
- Apply a soapy solution to the following in order to ease the installation of the hangers (1):
• | The inner diameter of the exhaust pipe hanger (1) |
• | The exhaust pipe hanger rod (3) |
- Position the front exhaust muffler pipe to the catalytic converters.
- Install the front exhaust muffler pipe to the front exhaust insulator.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the catalytic converter nuts (1) and tighten to
45 N·m(33 lb ft).
- Tighten the exhaust muffler clamp at the catalytic converter (2) and tighten to
43 N·m (32 lb ft).
- Raise the rear axle.
- Install both rearward spring shackle bolts and nuts. Refer to
Leaf Spring Replacement
- Install the lower shock absorber bolts (8) and nuts (9) and tighten to
95 N·m (70 lb ft).
- Remove the jack stand from under the rear axle.
- Install the heat shield located above the muffler assembly to converter y pipe.
- Install the propeller shaft center support bearing bolts. Refer to
Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement.
- Fasten the brake lines to the rear axle. Refer to
Rear Brake Hose Replacement.
- Install the rear axle vent tube to the body.
- Install the spair tire, Refer to
Spare Tire Carrier Replacement.
- Inspect the exhaust system for leaks and underbody contact.
- Lower the vehicle.
