VALVETRAIN NOISE/ROCKER ARM DAMAGE (DOUBLE SPRING SEATS)

Model and Year: 1988 CAVALIER, CORSICA AND BERETTA WITH 4 CYLINDER (VIN CODE 1) ENGINE

Excessive valvetrain noise on the above vehicles with the L4 engine may be created by the incorrect installation of two valve spring seats instead of one. (Refer to Figure 1 item 5).

Vehicles exhibiting excessive valvetrain noise should have all valve spring seats inspected for the possibility of two seats stacked on top of each other. Removing oil from around the base of the valve spring will make this inspection easier. Any valve spring that had two seats underneath it should have the rocker arm replaced. The two seat misbuild puts excessive loads on the rocker arm and can lead to premature failures.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
