DIRECT & FORWARD CLUTCH FIBER PLATE USE-NEW PLATES

Model and Year: 1989-90 A, J, L, W CARS WITH THM-125C (3T40) TRANSMISSIONS

TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

This bulletin covers information on New Smooth surface Fiber Plates that are used in the Direct Clutch Assemblies. These new plates have a smooth surface as compared to the previous grooved plates.

The new plates went into production as an option to grooved plates February 27, 1989, (Julian Date 058) for THM 125/125C/HYDRA-MATIC 3T40 transaxles. Therefore, some transaxles built after February 27, 1989, may contain grooved plates.

When service to any THM 125C/HYDRA-MATIC 3T40 built after February 27, 1989 (Julian Date 058) is necessary, smooth plates must be used in the Direct Clutch Assembly due to specific calibrations. Do not install grooved plates in the Direct Clutch Assembly. If service to the Forward Clutch is necessary, grooved or smooth plates may be used.

Refer to the following part numbers when ordering fiber plates for the Direct and/or Forward Clutch Assemblies:

Package Description Part No. ------------------- --------- Overhaul, Package 8665949 This package can be used in all models built since S.O.P. 1986.

Fiber Plates (only) Direct 8643741 or Forward Clutch

When it is necessary to order Overhaul Packages for fiber plates, be sure to order by the year the transaxle was built.

Parts are expected to be available on 4/24/89. Until then normal part orders will not be accepted by GMSPO. Only verifiable emergency VIP orders will be accepted. SPO will make every effort to obtain parts. All parts will be placed on 400 control to waive VIP surcharges. However, the part will be shipped premium transportation at dealer's expense. All other order types will be cancelled as incorrectly ordered while the 400 control is in place.

When service to the Direct/Forward Clutch is necessary, refer to the THM 125C/HYDRA-MATIC 3T40 Unit Repair Section of your Service Manual.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
