THIS BULLETIN IS REVISED TO ADD THE 1993 AND 1994 MODEL YEARS TO THE QUAD-4 GOODWRENCH SERVICE ACTIVITY. PREVIOUS DIVISIONAL PUBLICATION NUMBERS WERE:

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON QUAD-4 GOODWRENCH ENGINE SERVICE

MODELS: 1987-91 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS CALAIS 1988-91 BUICK SKYLARK 1988-94 PONTIAC GRAND AM 1990-91 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX 1990-94 CHEVROLET BERETTA 1992-94 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA WITH 2.3L ENGINE (VINS A AND D - RPOS LG0 AND LD2)

1992-94 2.3L (VINS A AND D - RPOS LG0 AND LD2) GM GOODWRENCH ENGINES WILL REPLACE THE 1987-93 2.3L (VINS A AND D - RPOS LG0 AND LD2) SERVICE REPLACEMENT ENGINE ASSEMBLIES AS SERVICE INVENTORY IS EXHAUSTED.

2.3L PARTIAL ENGINES ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. USE THE GM GOODWRENCH ENGINE TO SERVICE ENGINES PREVIOUSLY SERVICED WITH A PARTIAL ENGINE.

AN ECM CALIBRATION KIT IS REQUIRED WHEN REPLACING 1987-89 2.3L (VIN D) ENGINES WITH A 1992-94 GM GOODWRENCH ENGINE. THIS KIT CONTAINS A NEW EPROM (MEM-CAL), A CRANKCASE VENT HOSE CONNECTOR, INSTRUCTION SHEET, ECM PROM (MEM-CAL) ACCESS DOOR LABEL AND TWO (2) 10 MM EXHAUST MANIFOLD RETAINING NUTS THAT ARE REQUIRED TO ADAPT THE 1992-94 ENGINE TO THE 1987-89 APPLICATIONS.

FOR ANY FUTURE EPROM (MEM-CAL) REPLACEMENT, BE SURE THAT THE REPLACEMENT EPROM (MEM-CAL) IS THE CORRECT APPLICATION FOR THE GOODWRENCH ENGINE ASSEMBLY.

PARTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FROM GMSPO.

AN ECM CALIBRATION KIT IS REQUIRED FOR 1992-94 GM GOODWRENCH ENGINES WHEN USED IN 1987-89 APPLICATIONS. ECM CALIBRATION KITS ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR 1989 2.3L (VIN A) OR ANY 1990-94 APPLICATIONS.

THE ABOVE ENGINE REPLACEMENT KITS WERE DEVELOPED AND CERTIFIED FOR PROPER ENGINE OPERATION, PERFORMANCE, AND EMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND MUST ONLY BE USED TO ADAPT 1992-94 GOODWRENCH ENGINES TO THE APPLICATIONS NOTED.

THE FOLLOWING SUMMARIZES THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGES AMONG THE VARIOUS MODEL YEAR (VIN D) ENGINES. COMPONENTS ARE NOT GENERALLY INTERCHANGEABLE BETWEEN MODEL YEARS.

1. CYLINDER HEAD DESIGN * 1987-98 INTERCHANGEABLE FOR THESE MODEL YEARS ONLY. * 1990-93 INTERCHANGEABLE FOR THESE MODEL YEARS ONLY. * 1994 USED FOR THIS MODEL YEAR ONLY DUE TO INLET THERMOSTAT DESIGN.

2. CRANKSHAFT RELUCTOR INDEX * 1987-88 0 DEGREES. * 1989-94 15 DEGREES.

3. KNOCK SENSOR (ELECTRONIC SPARK CONTROL - ECS) SYSTEM CALIBRATION * SPECIFIC CALIBRATION FOR EACH MODEL YEAR (INVOLVING EMISSIONS, KNOCK AND SPARK CALIBRATIONS).

4. ELECTRONIC IGNITION MODULE ASSEMBLY * 1987-88 INTERCHANGEABLE FOR THESE MODEL YEARS ONLY. * 1989-92 INTERCHANGEABLE FOR THESE MODEL YEARS ONLY. * 1993-94 INTERCHANGEABLE FOR THESE MODEL YEARS ONLY.

5. INTAKE MANIFOLD * 1987-89 INTERCHANGEABLE FOR THESE MODEL YEARS ONLY. * 1990-94 INTERCHANGEABLE FOR THESE MODEL YEARS ONLY.

LABOR OPERATION: J1840 - ENGINE, UNIVERSAL - REPLACE J6364 - EPROM (CALIBRATOR, PROM) - REPLACE USE PUBLISHED LABOR OPERATION TIMES.
