RATTLE/CLICK AT START-UP (SHIELD CONVERTER, NEW P/N)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985-90 'J', 19-88-90 'L' W/2.8-L OR 3.1

Condition

Owners of 1985 through early 1990 J-cars and 1988 through early 1990 L-cars equipped with 2.8L or 3.1L V6 engines with automatic transmission may notice a rattling or clicking noise coming from the engine compartment. This noise is more apparent when the engine is cold and usually goes away as the engine warm up.

Cause:

The above noise may be due to the torque converter shield. This warped shield may interfere with the flywheel.

Correction:

A torque converter shield currently used on the W car has been released for use on the 2.8L and 3.1L 'J' and 'L' car. Refer to figures shown.

Parts:

Shield, Converter (previous) P/N #10085217

Shield, Converter (new) P/N #10009088

Replace cover, use three of the existing bolts removed from the vehicle.
