Condition: An accumulation of dust may be noted on some 1987-1991 Corsicas within the passenger compartment and rear compartment areas of the body.
Cause: The ELPO drain holes and design slots on the underside of each rocker panel may allow dust to enter the rocker panel. The dust travels through the "dog leg" into the rear compartment and then enters the passenger compartment through the rear shelf panel. An inoperative pressure relief valve may also contribute to dust intrusion by allowing dust from around the rear door area to enter the rear compartment. Still another source of dust infiltration may be the deck lid weatherstrip. An improper seal between the deck lid and the weatherstrip will enable dust to enter the rear compartment.
Correction: Inspect pressure relief valve for proper operation. - Seal "dog leg" at an area just below pressure relief valve. - Inspect rear compartment opening weatherstrip for proper sealing. - Seal ELPO drain holes and design slots on underside of each rocker panel. - These corrections should be performed as follows:
1. Remove retaining screw and pressure relief valve.
2. Inspect valve for proper operation. Flaps should seat uniformly against back of valve. If any flaps are torn, bent out of shape or missing, replace valve.
3. Seal area in "dog leg" as shown in Figure 1 using thumb grade sealer. An opening must be maintained starting from the lower corner of the relief valve and going inward approximately 25mm (1 inch) to allow for water drainage.
4. Install pressure relief valve and retaining screw.
5. Inspect rear compartment opening weatherstrip as follows:
a. If there are any rips or tears, replace the weatherstrip using the procedure in the Service Manual.
b. Perform watertest on weatherstrip. If any leaks are found, adjust the rear compartment lid using the procedure in the Service Manual.
6. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
7. Insert plug, P/N 14103377 into ELPO drain holes on the left and right rocker panels shown in Figure 2.
Part is currently available from GMSPO.
8. Seal design slots on the left and right rocker panels shown in Figure 2 using thumb grade sealer.
9. Remove supports and lower vehicle.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
