SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE SEC. 7A TRANSAXLE MOUNT/STRUT REMOVAL

SUBJECT: SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE - SECTION 7A AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE (ADDITION OF TRANSAXLE MOUNT/STRUT REMOVAL PROCEDURES)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1991 L CAR W/2.2, 3.1 ENGINE

This bulletin is to advise dealers of the Transaxle Mount and Strut Removal Procedures not included in Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service (Section 7A) page 7A27 between transaxle cooler pipe and transaxle assembly of the 1991 Corsica/Beretta Service Manuals. For the Removal and Installation Procedures and Illustrations refer to the following:

CHECKING TRANSAXLE-MOUNTS

INSPECT

Pull up and push down on the transaxle case while observing the mount. If the mount separates from the metal plate of the mount if the case moves up, but not down, (mount bottomed out), replace the mount. If there is movement between the metal plate of the mount and its attaching point, tighten the bolts attaching the mount to the mount bracket or side frame. Refer to Figure 1.

Tool Required: J 28467-A Engine Support Fixture

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Negative battery cable.

2. Install J 28467-A and raise the engine to take pressure off of the transaxle mount.

3. Air cleaner assembly, 3.1L (VIN T) only.

4. Bracket to mount (thru bolt) bolt and nut.

5. Bolt and nuts attaching transaxle mount to side frame.

6. Transaxle mount.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Transaxle mount to side frame. 2. Transaxle mount attaching nuts and bolt.

TIGHTEN

- Mount bolt to 55 N.m (41 lbs. ft.) - Mount nuts to 33 N.m (24 lbs. ft.)

3. Transaxle mount bracket to mount bolt (thru bolt) and nut.

TIGHTEN

- Mount bracket to mount bolt (thru bolt) to 98 N.m (72 lbs. ft.).

4. Loosen the two nuts at the top of the mount. Lower the engine and allow the engine and transaxle to center the mount, then tighten the two nuts to specification.

TIGHTEN

- Two mount nuts to 33 N.m (24 lbs. ft.).

5. Remove J 28647-A. 6. Install air cleaner assembly, 3.1L (VIN T) only. 7. Negative battery cable.

TRANSAXLE MOUNT BRACKET

2.2L VIN G and 3.1L VIN T

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Negative battery cable. 2. Air cleaner assembly, 3.1L (VIN T) only. 3. Install J 28467-A and raise the engine to take pressure off the transaxle mount. 4. Bracket to mount bolt (thru bolt) and nut. 5. Bracket to case bolts. 6. Bracket to engine bolts. 7. Mount bracket.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Mount bracket and bolts.

TIGHTEN

- Bracket to case bolts to 55 N.m (40 lbs. ft.). - Bracket to engine bolts to 75 N. m (55 lbs. ft.).

2. Bracket to mount bolt (thru bolt) and nut. 3. Lower the engine.

TIGHTEN

- Bracket to mount bolt (thru bolt) to 98 N.m (72 lbs. ft.).

4. Remove J 28467-A. 5. Air cleaner assembly, 3.1L (VIN T) only. 6. Negative battery cable.

TRANSAXLE STRUT - Refer to Figure 2

2.2L VIN G and 3.1L VIN T

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Negative battery cable. 2. Install engine support fixture J 28467-A and raise the engine to take pressure off the transaxle strut. 3. Raise the vehicle, refer to General Information (Section OA). 4. Bolts and nuts attaching the strut to the transaxle strut bracket and crossmember. 5. Strut

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Strut and attaching bolts.

TIGHTEN

- Transaxle strut bolts to 60 N.m (44 lbs. ft.).

2. Lower the vehicle. 3. Lower engine and remove J 28467-A. 4. Negative battery cable.
