ABS WARNING INDICATOR LAMP ON REPROGRAM EBCM

SUBJECT: ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS)/BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR LAMP ON (REPROGRAM EBCM)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992 "J/N/L" AND 1991 "N" MODELS

CONDITION:

--------- Some 1992 J/N/L and 1991 N car owners may experience an Antilock Brake System (ABS) indicator lamp or brake warning lamp coming on prematurely. This may result in any combination of ABS codes 38 and/or 41 and 86 being set.

CORRECTION:

---------- Reprogram EBCM using Tech 1 and cartridge.

Delco Chassis has released a reprogramming cartridge for servicing vehicles with any combination of ABS brake codes 38 and/or 41 and 86. This cartridge, which currently is to be used to reprogram the EBCM in 1992 J, N and L cars and in 1991 N cars, and is available only through Delco Chassis Technical Assistance at 1-800-523-0203. Later in the 1993 model year the reprogramming function will be added to the mass storage cartridge through a CD software release. The following criteria must be met before reprogramming the EBCM:

o Any combination of codes 38 and/or 41 and 86 must be present.

o Only vehicles with verified codes 38 and/or 41 and 86 can be reprogrammed.

o The work order, with the VIN clearly marked must be faxed to:

Robert Early, C/0 Harco Industries at 513-836-8916.

Prior to reprogramming, if any codes other than 38 and/or 41 and 86 are present, proceed to the vehicle's service manual SECTION 5E1 for diagnosis of those codes first.

After reprogramming, clear codes using the 1988 - 1993 Chassis selection of the Tech 1 Mass Storage Cartridge.

WITH FOOT OFF BRAKE PEDAL, start the engine twice and allow it to run for at least 10 seconds each time. If any codes return (including 38 and/or 41 and 86), proceed to the vehicle's service manual SECTION 5E1 for further diagnosis.

If there are any questions regarding the usage of this reprogramming cartridge or diagnosis for the ABS VI brake system, please contact Delco Chassis technical assistance at the telephone numbers listed above.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
