Starter Replacement LN2

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Raising the Vehicle in General Information.

  3. Object Number: 97617  Size: SH
  4. Remove the bending brace from around the starter (manual trans. only).
  5. Remove the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then lower the starter.
  6. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the starter bracket to the starter and engine.
  7. Remove the leads.
  8. Remove the starter.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 97617  Size: SH
  1. Install the starter.
  2. Install the leads to the starter.
  3. Tighten

        • Tighten the S terminal to 2.5 N·m (22 lb in).
        • Tighten the battery terminal to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the starter to engine bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  6. Install the nuts/bolts that hold the starter bracket to the starter and engine.
  7. Install the bending brace (manual trans. only).
  8. Lower the car.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

  4. Remove the starter motor-to-engine bolts.
  5. Lower the starter.
  6. Remove the electrical leads, while supporting the starter motor.
  7. Remove the starter.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the starter.
  2. Install the electrical leads, while supporting the starter motor.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten to 9.5 N·m (84 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Raise the starter into mounting position.
  5. Install the starter motor-to-engine bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten both bolts to 43 N·m (32 lb ft)

  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
