Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

    in General Information.
  2. Remove the console as necessary.
  3. Remove the left sound insulator.
  4. Remove the steering column knee bolster panel as necessary.
  5. Lower the steering column.
  6. Place the shift lever in (P) Park.
  7. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.

    Important: Do not attempt to perform the following steps with the key in any other position.

  9. Slip a screwdriver blade into the slot provided in the ignition switch inhibitor.
  10. Depress the cable latch.
  11. Pull the cable from the inhibitor.
  12. Pull the cable adjuster locking button at the shift control bracket to the UP position.

  14. Pull rearward on the cable end in order to unsnap the cable from the park lock lever pin on the shift control assembly.
  15. Depress the two cable adjuster tangs and remove from the shifter control assembly.
  16. Remove the cable clips.

Installation Procedure

    Important: When installing a new park lock cable, keep the shipping cover gage attached until you are instructed to detach below. The shipping cover gage will aid in the proper positioning of the cable.

  1. With the cable adjuster locking button in the UP position and the shift lever in the (P) Park position, snap the cable connector into the shifter control bracket.
  2. With the ignition in the RUN position, snap the cable into the inhibitor housing. Ensure that the snap lock is seated.
  3. Important: 

       • Do not insert the cable with the key in any other position except RUN.
       • Remove the shipping cover gage.

  4. Turn the ignition key to LOCK.
  5. Snap the cable end onto the park lock lever pin on the shift control assembly.
  6. Push the cable connector hose forward in order to remove slack.
  7. With no load applied to the connector nose, snap the cable connector lock button down.
  8. Important: Before installing the steering column to the instrument panel, check for proper operation.

  9. Raise the steering column. Connect the steering column.
  10. Install the steering column knee bolster panel.
  11. Install the left sound insulator.
  12. Install the console.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.

Inspection and Testing

  1. Ensure that the terminal stop on the column end of the park/lock cable is touching the white collar that protrudes from the ignition switch. Complete the following steps in order to inspect the cable:
  2. 1.1. Turn the column lock cylinder to Lock.
    1.2. Place the floor shift lever in to (P) Park.

            Important: 
       • There must be no gap between the metal terminal stop and the protruding end of the white plastic collar. If there is a gap between the terminal stop and the collar, adjust the position of the park/lock cable.
       • The white plastic collar must be either flush or recessed approximately 1 mm (0.04 in) within the ignition park/lock housing. If the white plastic collar is not in the proper location, adjust the position of the park/lock cable.

    1.3. Verify the correct position of the terminal stop.
  3. Ensure that the travel of the white plastic collar does not exceed 1.5 mm (0.006 in). Complete the following steps:
  4. 2.1. Ensure that the column lock cylinder remains in Lock.
    2.2. Ensure that the floor shift lever remains in (P) Park.
    2.3. Gently depress the park/lock button on the floor shift lever until resistance is felt.
    2.4. Verify that the white plastic collar travel does not exceed 1.5 mm (0.006 in). The floor shift lever must not come out of (P) Park.
  5. With the column lock cylinder ON, verify the proper movement of the floor shift lever through all gear selections.
  6. While moving the floor shift lever through all drive gears, verify that the column lock cylinder cannot be turned to the Lock position.
  7. Important: There are five inspections that verify proper installation. The installation must pass all five tests. If one or more tests fail, the park/lock cable requires adjustment. Refer to Park Lock Cable Adjustment .

  8. Check that the key can be removed with the column lock cylinder in the Lock position and the floor shift lever in the (P) Park position.
