Some early 1984 corvettes with four-speed manual transmission with automatic overdrive have maintenance schedules that did not include the mileage factor for fluid change in the automatic overdrive portion of the transmission.
The "Corvette Owners Manual" and the "General Motors Maintenance Schedule" for 1984 has been reissued to include a fluid replacement requirement. It is recommended hat the fluid in the overdrive unit be replaced with DEXRON -II automatic transmission fluid (GM P/N 1051855) every 30,000 miles (50,000 km). The manual transmission fluid does not require changing.
REFILLING OR CHECKING THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION WITH AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE ------------------------------------- Check the fluid level only when the transmission is cold, the engine off, and the vehicle is level.
For checking or refill, the fluid level should be at the level of the filler plug hole located on the passenger side of the 4-speed case. Use SAE 80W GL-5 gear lubricant if additional lubricant is needed.
For checking or refill, the fluid level should be at the level of the filler plug hole located on the driver's side of the overdrive case. Use DEXRON R-II automatic transmission fluid.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
