REAR AXLE SERVICE PARTS USAGE AND IDENTIFICATION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1984-86 Corvette

When servicing the 1984-86 Corvette rear axle, it should be noted that there is a 1st and 2nd design differential carrier housing. (See attached illustration). The 2nd design carrier was an interim 1984 model year change, (the cross bore was widened). To compensate for this change, the differential case bearing cup (outer race) thickness was increased.

When servicing a 1984 vehicle rear axle, determination must be made whether the axle is a lst or 2nd design. The bearing cups are not interchangeable because of the cup thickness difference. Listed below are the part numbers for the correct combinations:

Differential Case Bearing ------------------------- GM Part Number Manufacturer's Ident. Number -------------- ----------------------------

Bearing Assy. Bearing Cup Bearing Cone

1st Design 457232 LM 501310 LM 501349 2nd Design 9420095 LM 501314 LM 501349

NOTICE: The P/N 14091437 differential case may be used with either the 1st or 2nd design carrier with the proper bearing cups.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
