STOWAGE LID NOT FLUSH W/REAR DECK-PROCEDURE & STEEL RIVETS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1989-90 CHEVROLET CORVETTE CONVERTIBLE

Condition: Some 1989 and early 1990 Chevrolet Corvette Convertibles may exhibit a height difference between the stowage compartment lid and the rear deck.

Cause: This condition may be caused by a lack of adhesive between the steel inner reinforcement and the stowage compartment lid inner panel.

Correction:

1. Remove the stowage lid as outlined in the Service Manual.

2. Drill 8 (eight) equally spaced 1/8 inch holes through the vertical surface (See Figure 1) of the stowage lid inner panel and the reinforcement.

IMPORTANT: Use a Drill Stop Set At a Depth of 1 inch when drilling these holes in order to prevent damage to the compartment lid.

3. Install 1/8 inch diameter x 1/4 inch long STEEL rivets in the holes.

IMPORTANT: Do not use aluminum rivets as they will not provide the strength necessary to keep the lid from bowing.

4. Coat the rivet heads with touch-up paint to prevent rust.

5. Replace stowage lid as outlined in the Service Manual.

Use the most applicable labour operation and time from the Canadian Labour Time Guide.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
