SUBJECT: CONVERTIBLE STOWAGE LID CONTACTS LUGGAGE RACK WHEN OPENED (REPLACE WITH HINGE ARM BUMPER)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1989-92 CHEVROLET CORVETTE "Y"

CONDITION:

--------- Some 1989-92 Corvette convertible style vehicles may have a stowage lid that contacts the luggage rack when the lid is opened.

CAUSE:

----- Full open angle of the lid allows it to travel too far rearward, contacting the luggage rack.

CORRECTION:

---------- Replace the original bumper (shown in the illustration) with a modified bumper P/N 15679393 and add a piece of 5/8" heater hose P/N 12322342 (or equivalent) to the hinge arm. Use the following procedure. This will change the available opening angle of the lid.

1. With the convertible top in the up position;

- Release the rear bow latch,

- Release the rear stowage lid and raise to full up position,

- Prop rear bow of convertible top in up position.

2. Locate and remove the original bumper from the flange on the hinge box and discard (see illustration Views A and B).

3. Obtain new bumper P/N 15679393 and, using a hacksaw, cut a slot 7 mm (9/32") deep and 1.5 mm (1/16") wide in the bumper as shown in the illustration.

4. Apply a coating of p/n 12345632, 3M P/N 08011,414 Loctite or equivalent, weatherstrip adhesive to the slot.

5. Install the bumper in position on the flange as shown in the illustration. NOTE: Arrowhead shape faces toward rear of vehicle.

6. Cut 30 mm (1-3/16") length of 5/8" heater hose P/N 12322342 or equivalent and slit along the length.

7. Apply a coating of P/N 12345632, 3M P/N 08011,414 Loctite or equivalent, weatherstrip adhesive to the inside diameter of the hose.

8. Install the hose on the hinge arm as shown in the illustration so that it will make contact with the bumper when the stowage lid is open. The open side of the hose should face inboard. NOTE: View 'C'.

9. Repeat steps 2 through 8 for the remaining side of the lid.

10. Close the stowage lid for 20 minutes, allowing the adhesive to cure.

For vehicles repaired under warranty use 0.5 hours.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
