CD PLAYER MAY SKIP WHEN DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS

SUBJECT: CD PLAYER MAY SKIP WHEN DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS (ADD FOAM TO RADIO)

MODELS: 1991-94 CHEVROLET CORVETTE WITH RPO CODE U1F RADIO

CONDITION:

CUSTOMERS MAY COMMENT THAT THE CD PLAYER (ON THE RPO CODE U1F RADIO) SKIPS EXCESSIVELY WHEN DRIVING ON ROUGH ROADS. WHILE SOME AMOUNT OF SKIPPING IS CONSIDERED NORMAL WHEN HITTING SEVERE BUMPS, THE FREQUENCY OF SKIPS MAY CAUSE COMMENTS.

CAUSE:

THE RADIO IS SECURED TO THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ONLY AT THE FRONT. THE RADIO IS FREE TO MOVE SLIGHTLY AT THE BACK, WHICH CAN CAUSE THE CD PLAYER TO SKIP.

FOAM TAPE WAS ADDED TO THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE RADIO AT THE START OF THE 1994 MODEL YEAR. THIS STABILIZES THE RADIO AND PREVENTS EXCESSIVE MOVEMENT.

CORRECTION:

NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD ALSO BE USED ANY TIME A U1F RADIO IS REPLACED DURING SERVICE, FOR 1991-1994 MODEL YEARS.

1. DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

2. REMOVE THE RADIO FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS IN SECTION 8C. OBTAIN TWO PIECES OF FOAM, P/N 10247760. FOLLOWING THE ILLUSTRATION, PLACE ONE WHOLE PIECE ON THE TOP OF THE RADIO. THE BOTTOM PIECE WILL BE CUT IN HALF AND DOUBLED UP TO MAKE IT 1/2" (12 MM) THICK.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE ABOVE TAPE BE USED FOR TWO REASONS. FIRST, IT IS A SPECIAL URETHANE TAPE THAT WILL NOT TAKE A SET. MOST TAPES COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE WILL QUICKLY TAKE A SET AND BECOME INEFFECTIVE. SECOND, THE TAPE HAS A SPECIAL COATING THAT MAKES REINSTALLING THE RADIO EASIER.

3. REINSTALL THE RADIO CAREFULLY, MAKING SURE THAT THE TAPE STAYS IN PLACE.

4. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
