STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL SPECIAL TOOL USAGE

IF DIFFICULTY IS NOTED IN THE REMOVAL OF THE STEERING WHEEL ON 1990-91 Y-CARS WHEN USING THE CORRECT SPECIAL TOOLS, J-1859-03 (STEERING WHEEL PULLER) AND J-38720 (PULLER SIDE SCREWS) IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF USING THESE TOOLS BE TRIED AS INDICATED BELOW:

1. INSTALL WHEEL PULLER AND SIDE SCREWS, INSURING SIDE SCREWS ARE SHOULDERED OUT ON STEERING WHEEL HUB.

2. BACK OUT EACH SIDE SCREW ONE (1) REVOLUTION FROM THE SHOULDERED OUT POSITION AND RETIGHTEN WHEEL PULLER CENTER SCREW.

3. ALTERNATELY TIGHTEN EACH SIDE SCREW 1/4 TURN.

NOTICE: TIGHTENING SIDE SCREWS MORE THAN A 1/4 TURN AT A TIME MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE STEERING WHEEL.

UTILIZING THE ABOVE PROCEDURE WILL GENERATE A ROCKING FORCE ON THE WHEEL AND MAY ASSIST IN DISENGAGING WHEEL FROM THE SHAFT.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
