THE LH AND RH TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS IN THE LT5 ENGINE CANNOT BE INSTALLED IN THEIR EXTENDED POSITIONS. IF THE LENGTH OF THE TENSIONERS ARE GREATER THAN 55 MM, (2.165 IN.) DO NOT USE THEM. SEE FIGURE 1. IF A TENSIONER IS RECEIVED FROM GMSPO IN THE EXTENDED POSITION, RETURN IT AS A BAD COMPONENT. WHEN A TENSIONER IS REMOVED FROM AN ENGINE, REPLACE IT WITH A NEW PART.

IF AN EXTENDED TENSIONER IS REINSTALLED IN THE ENGINE, IT WILL CREATE EXTREME LOADING ON THE TIMING CHAIN CAUSING THE TIMING CHAIN TO BREAK. WHEN THE TIMING CHAIN BREAKS, THE VALVES WILL CONTACT THE PISTONS AND CAUSE EXTREME ENGINE DAMAGE.
