Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to SECTION 0A.
  3. Drain the engine oil.

  5. Disconnect the oil level sensor connector.
  6. Remove the oil level sensor.

  8. Remove the oil filter.

  10. Remove the oil filter adapter bolts.
  11. Remove the oil filter adapter.
  12. Remove the starter motor assembly. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  13. Remove the left catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement .
  14. Remove the flywheel cover plate. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  15. Remove the knock sensor shield nuts.
  16. Remove the knock sensor shields.

  18. Remove the oil pan bolts, studs and nuts.
  19. Remove the oil pan.
  20. Remove the oil pan reinforcements.
  21. Remove the gasket.
  22. Clean the oil pan and engine block gasket surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 32086  Size: SH
  1. Apply a small amount of sealer, GM P/N 1052914 or equivalent, to the front cover and the engine block junction. Apply the sealer 25 mm (1.0 in) in either direction of the radius of these junctions.

  2. Object Number: 32080  Size: SH
  3. Apply a small amount of sealer, GM P/N 1052914 or equivalent, to the rear oil seal housing and engine block junction. Apply the sealer 25 mm (1.0 in) in either direction of the radius of these junctions.

  4. Object Number: 11437  Size: SH
  5. Install the gasket.
  6. Install the oil pan.
  7. Install the oil pan reinforcements.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the oil pan bolts, studs and nuts.
  10. Tighten

        • Tighten the corner oil pan bolts or stud, and nuts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
        • Tighten the remainder of the oil pan bolts and studs to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  11. Install the oil level sensor.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the oil level sensor to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  13. Install the knock sensor shields and nuts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the knock sensor shield nuts to 8.5 N·m (75 lb in).

  15. Lower the engine.
  16. Install the flywheel cover plate. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  17. Install the left catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement .
  18. Install the starter motor assembly. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  19. Object Number: 11436  Size: SH
  20. Install the oil filter adapter and the oil filter adapter bolts.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the oil filter adapter bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).


    Object Number: 11435  Size: SH
  22. Install the oil filter.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the oil filter to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  24. Connect the oil level sensor connector.
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26. Refill the engine with oil.
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
