Notice: When adding coolant, use DEX-COOL® coolant. If silicated coolant
is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion
may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner-at
50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
in General Information.
- Disconnect the IAT sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the air cleaner and the intake duct.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
.
- Remove the inlet and outlet radiator hoses and clamps from the water pump.
- Remove the throttle body hose at the T fitting.
- Remove the heater hose from the water pump.
- Disconnect the ECT sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the ECT sensor wiring harness retainer on the front of
the water pump.
- Remove the serpentine drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
in Engine Mechanical.
- Remove the bolts securing the water pump to the engine block.
- Remove the water pump from the vehicle.
- Thoroughly clean the engine block and the water pump sealing surfaces.
- Inspect the o-ring seals on the water pump driveshaft and the
drive front cover for cracks and dryness. Replace any damaged o-ring seals.

- When replacing the water pump, transfer the ECT sensor from the
old water pump to the new water pump.
Tighten
Tighten the ECT sensor to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Important: Before assembling the coupling to the water pump, apply a light coat
of grease to the seals and the splines.
- Install the coupling with the groove toward the engine.
- Install new gaskets, with the tabs up, the water pump with the
drive coupling, and mounting bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).
- Install the serpentine drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
in Engine Mechanical.
- Install the ECT sensor wire harness retainer on the front of the water pump,
and the electrical connector.
- Connect the heater hose to the water pump.
- Connect the inlet and outlet radiator hoses and clamps to the water pump.
- Install the throttle body hose at the T fitting.
- Refill the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
.
- Install the air cleaner and the intake duct.
- Install the IAT electrical connector.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
Tighten
Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
- Start the engine.
- Check for coolant leaks.
