Removal Procedure

Notice: Turn OFF the ignition when connecting or disconnecting the battery cables, the battery charger or the jumper cables. Failure to do so may damage the PCM or other electronic components.

  1. Remove the left front fender. Refer to Section 10-5.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

    in General Information.
  3. Disconnect the positive battery cable.

  4. Object Number: 14833 Size: SH
  5. Remove the battery hold down retainer bolt.
  6. Remove the battery hold down retainer.
  7. Remove the battery and the insulator.

Inspection Procedure

Caution: Batteries generate hydrogen gas, which is extremely flammable and may explode violently if ignited by a spark or a flame. Battery acid is extremely corrosive and causes severe personal injury if the acid comes into contact with the skin, and blindness if the acid comes into contact with the eyes. In order to avoid severe personal injury, use extreme caution when servicing the battery or battery-related components.

  1. Visually inspect the following battery components for damage:
  2. • The case
    • The cover
    • The negative battery cable
    • The positive battery cable
    • The negative battery terminal
    • The positive battery terminal
  3. If any of the above components are damaged, replace the battery.
  4. Inspect the outside of battery for electrolyte leakage, particularly around the vent holes.
  5. If the leakage is excessive, determine the condition of the battery.
  6. If the leakage is due to overcharging or excessive tipping, clean the battery.

Installation Procedure

Important: Clean the battery hold down retainer of all dirt and corrosion before installing the battery. Ensure that the hold down retainer is in sound condition. Ensure that the battery tray is free of any parts or debris befor installing the battery.

  1. Install the battery and the insulator.
  2. Install the battery hold down retainer.
  3. Important: In order to prevent the battery from shaking, ensure that the hold down retainer bolt is tight, but not over tightened.

    Object Number: 14833 Size: SH
  4. Install the battery hold down retainer bolts.
  5. Tighten
Tighten the battery hold down retainer bolts to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Connect the positive battery cable.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the positive battery cable to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Tighten
Tighten the negative battery cable to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  10. Install the left front fender. Refer to Section 10-5.
