Removal Procedure

Notice: This engine has aluminum cylinder heads. Do not remove the spark plugs from a hot engine, allow it to cool first. Removing the spark plugs from a hot engine may cause spark plug thread damage or cylinder head damage.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to the

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

    in General Information.
  2. Notice: Note the spark plug wire harness routing during harness removal. Improper routing during installation can cause the following conditions:

       • Radio noise
       • Ignition noise
       • Spark plug crossfiring
       • Ground lead shorts
       • Cutting and chaffing of the wires

  3. Remove the spark plug wire harnesses. Refer to Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly .
  4. Clean away all dirt and debris from the spark plug recess areas.
  5. Remove the left side spark plugs.

  6. Object Number: 14824 Size: SH
  7. Remove the right side spark plugs.

Installation Procedure

  1. Ensure that the spark plug threads and the cylinder heads are clean.
  2. Inspect the spark plug gap. Adjust as needed.
  3. Notice: Be sure plug threads smoothly into cylinder head and is fully seated. Use a thread chaser if necessary to clean threads in cylinder head. Cross-threading or failing to fully seat spark plug can cause overheating of plug, exhaust blow-by, or thread damage. Follow the recommended torque specifications carefully. Over or under-tightening can also cause severe damage to engine or spark plug.

    Object Number: 14824 Size: SH
  4. Install the spark plugs into the cylinder head finger tight. Then tighten the spark plugs to specifications.
  5. Tighten
Tighten the spark plugs to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the spark plug wire harnesses. Refer to Spark Plug Wires Not Operating Properly .
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Tighten
Tighten the negative battery cable to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
