GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only
  1. Before attempting to repair the following components for any reasons other than an obvious failure, identify the problem and probable cause:
  2. • The clutch
    • The transmission assembly
    • The hydraulic system
    • Related Linkages
  3. Shifting difficulties such as the following conditions represent a large percentage of clutch and manual transmission assembly problems:
  4. • A high shift effort
    • Gear clash
    • Gear grinding
    • Transmission blockout
  5. When any of these conditions occur perform a careful analysis of the difficulty and perform the following checks and adjustments in sequence before removing the clutch or manual transmission assembly for repairs.
  6. There are many things which effect good clutch operations. Therefore, it is necessary to make preliminary inspections before performing any major clutch operations in order to determine whether the trouble is actually in the clutch. Preliminary inspections also ensure good clutch operations.
  7. Perform the following functions, in order to ensure that the clutch releases fully:
  8. 5.1. With the engine running and the brake pedal applied, push the clutch pedal to the floor. Move the shift lever between the first and reverse gears several times.

If this can be done smoothly, the clutch is fully releasing. If the shift is not smooth, the clutch is not fully releasing and inspection is necessary.

5.2. Check the clutch pedal bushing for sticking or excessive wear.
5.3. Check the clutch pedal travel. The clutch pedal should have approximately 15.3 cm (6.25 in) of travel when fully depressed.
