Shift Cable Adjustment

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Place the shift lever in the neutral gate; do not use the indicator to find the neutral position.
  3. Raise the vehicle and suitably support it.

  5. Disconnect cable from the transmission control lever by prying the cable end from the control lever ball stud.
  6. Disconnect shift cable from the fuel line and transfer case clips, if equipped.
  7. Pry the locking tab of the shift cable out at the transmission bracket.
  8. Place the transmission control lever in the neutral position by moving the shift lever to the full clockwise position and then turn counterclockwise two detents.
  9. Disconnect the shift cable to the transmission control lever.
  10. Press the locking tab of the shift cable in being careful not to contact the shift cable while pushing the locking tab in.

  12. Disconnect the shift cable to the fuel line and transfer case clips, if equipped.
  13. Check the adjustment.
  14. • All transmission detent positions must be attainable when moving the shift lever from P (park) to 1.
    • The key will only be removable in the P (park) position.

       Caution: With the selector lever in the PARK position, the parking pawl should freely engage within the rear reaction internal gear lugs or output ring hear lugs and prevent the vehicle from rolling, which could cause personal injury.

    • The engine must start in the P (park) or N (neutral) positions only. Adjust if needed . Refer to Park/Neutral Backup Switch Adjustment in Automatic Transmission On-Vehicle Service.
  15. Align the indicator.
  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. Release the parking brake.
