Oil Pan and Rocker Arm Covers Cleaning and Inspection Valve Rocker Arm Cover

Important: 

   • Do not reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket. Install a NEW gasket during assembly.
   • Remove the ignition coils before cleaning the cover in solvent. Do not submerge the ignition coils in solvent.
   • Note the location of the beauty cover mounting studs for assembly.
   • Do not remove the oil fill tube or crankcase vent valve grommett from the covers unless service is required.
   • If the oil fill tube or crankcase vent valve grommet have been removed from the rocker arm covers, install a NEW tube or grommett during assembly.

  1. Remove the ignition coils, bolts and wire harness from the left cover (if required).

  2. Object Number: 65290  Size: SH
  3. Remove the ignition coils, bolts and wire harness from the right cover (if required).

  4. Object Number: 64263  Size: SH
  5. Remove the oil fill cap and tube from the right cover (if required).

  6. Object Number: 63244  Size: SH
  7. Remove the crankcase vent valve grommet from the left cover (if required).
  8. Remove the gaskets from the covers.
  9. Remove the cover mounting bolts (with grommets).
  10. Cover mounting bolts and grommets that are not damaged may be reused during assembly.

  11. Clean the covers in solvent.

    Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

  13. Dry the covers with compressed air.
  14. Inspect the ventilation system passages for restrictions.
  15. Inspect the gasket grooves for damage.
  16. Inspect the coil mounting bosses threaded bolt holes for damaged threads or debris.

  18. Inspect the oil fill tube and the crankcase vent valve grommet for a loose fit or damage.

Oil Pan and Rocker Arm Covers Cleaning and Inspection Oil Pan

Important: 

   • Do not reuse the oil pan cover gasket. Install a NEW cover gasket during assembly.
   • Do not reuse the oil pan to engine block gasket. Install a NEW gasket during assembly.
   • When installing a NEW oil pan gasket, it is not necessary to install the rivets that retain the NEW gasket to the pan.

  1. Remove the oil level sensor from the pan.

  2. Object Number: 64842  Size: SH
  3. Remove the oil temperature sensor, oil pan cover, gasket and bolts.

  4. Object Number: 74223  Size: SH
  5. Remove the oil pan drain plug and internal O-ring seal.

  6. Object Number: 156160  Size: SH
  7. Remove the oil pan baffle bolts and baffle.
  8. Clean the oil pan in solvent. Be sure to thoroughly clean all of the oil passages and recesses of the pan.
  9. Clean the oil pan gasket surfaces.
  10. Refer to Replacing Engine Gaskets .

    Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

  11. Dry the oil pan with compressed air.
  12. Inspect the gasket sealing surfaces for excessive scratches or gouging.
  13. Refer to Replacing Engine Gaskets

  14. Inspect the oil pan oil level sensor seal surface damage.
  15. Inspect the oil pan core plugs for looseness.

  16. Object Number: 74223  Size: SH
  17. Inspect the oil pan drain plug and threaded drain hole for damaged threads.
  18. The drain plug O-ring seal may be reused if not cut or damaged.

  19. Inspect the oil filter sealing surface for scratches or gouging.
  20. Inspect the oil filter fitting for a loose fit or damaged threads.
  21. Inspect the oil passages for restrictions.
  22. Inspect the O-ring seal of the oil level sensor cuts or damage. If the O-ring seal is not damaged, the O-ring may be used during assembly.
  23. Inspect the oil filter bypass valve for proper operation.
  24. Lightly push the bypass valve into the bore. The valve spring should reseat the valve to the proper position.
