Front, Rear, and Valley Covers Cleaning and Inspection Front and Rear Covers

Important: Do not reuse the crankshaft oil seals. Install NEW crankshaft oil seals during assembly.

Do not reuse the front and rear cover-to-engine block gaskets. Install NEW gaskets during assembly.

  1. Remove the crankshaft oil seal from the front cover.

  2. Object Number: 64282  Size: SH
  3. Remove the crankshaft oil seal from the rear cover.
  4. Clean the covers in solvent. Remove the sealant from the oil pan sealing surfaces.
  5. Refer to Replacing Engine Gaskets .

    Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

  6. Dry the covers with compressed air.
  7. Inspect the gasket sealing surfaces for excessive scratches or gouging.
  8. Inspect the cover-to-oil pan threaded bolt holes for damaged threads or debris.
  9. Inspect the crankshaft oil seal mounting bore for damage.

    Object Number: 490851  Size: SH

    Important: Do not reuse the valley cover knock sensor oil seals. Install NEW oil seals during assembly.

    Do not reuse the valley cover gasket. Install a NEW gasket during assembly.

  1. Remove the knock sensor oil seals (1) from the valley cover (2).
  2. Clean the valley cover in solvent.
  3. Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

  4. Dry the valley cover with compressed air.
  5. Inspect the gasket sealing surfaces for excessive scratches or gouging.
  6. Refer to Replacing Engine Gaskets .

  7. Inspect the valley cover oil seal bores for excessive scratches or gouging.
