Circuit Description

The Oil Level sensor is a normally open switch. When the engine oil level drops below a predetermined amount, the switch will close. The PCM will then send a message (via class 2) to the BCM indicating that a low oil condition is present. The Driver Information Center then displays Low Oil Level.

Important: This table assumes that the oil level is at the proper level or the oil level was low and the Low Oil Level message never was displayed. Check for BCM DTCs for the Driver Information Center.

  1. Turn ON the ignition leaving the engine OFF.
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  3. Disconnect the Oil Level sensor electrical connector.
  4. Measure the voltage at the A terminal of the Oil Level sensor electrical connector to the chassis ground using the DMM J 39200 .

Engine Oil Level/Oil Life Monitor Reset Procedure

Description

The Oil Life Monitor is used to inform the driver when the next service interval is required. In order to determine when the next oil change is needed the PCM monitors the following:

    • Distance the vehicle has traveled
    • Vehicle Speed
    • Engine Load
    • Engine Coolant Temperature
    • Engine Revolutions

When the PCM determines that an oil change is needed, the PCM will send a message to the BCM via class 2. Then a Change Oil Now message will appear on the Driver Information Center.

A scan tool can be used to monitor the Oil Life Monitor. The scan tool displays the amount of oil life in percentage.

Important: Repair any TP or APP sensor DTCs before proceeding with the reset procedure.

Resetting The Oil Life Monitor

  1. Turn On the ignition leaving the engine OFF.
  2. Cycle the Accelerator Pedal from a closed throttle to a wide open throttle (WOT) 3 times within 5 seconds.
  3. Change the engine oil and the oil filter.
