Draining Fuel Tanks Pump Inoperative

    Caution: Always wear safety goggles when working with fuel in order to protect the eyes from fuel splash.

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Relief .
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Remove both of the rear wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Attach a length of flexible fuel hose to an air operated pump device.
  5. Position an approved drain container under the left tank fuel sender.
  6. Wrap a shop towel around the left tank fuel feed rear pipe (4).
  7. Disconnect the fuel feed rear pipe (4) at the left tank fuel sender.
  8. Remove the plastic connector retainer from the fuel feed pipe nipple (5) (plastic collar quick-connect fittings only).
  9. Attach the flexible fuel hose from the pump device to the fuel feed pipe nipple (5) using a screw type clamp.
  10. Drain the left fuel tank until no fuel comes out.
  11. Disconnect the pump device from the left tank fuel feed pipe nipple (5).
  12. Install the plastic connector retainer to the fuel feed pipe nipple (plastic collar quick-connect fittings only).
  13. Cap the fuel feed pipe nipple (5) and the fuel feed rear pipe (4).

  15. Position an approved drain container under the right tank fuel sender.
  16. Wrap a shop towel around the fuel sender fuel feed pipe (3) (jet pump to left tank) at the right fuel sender.
  17. Disconnect the fuel sender fuel feed pipe (3) (jet pump to left tank) at the right tank fuel sender.
  18. Remove the plastic connector retainer from the fuel sender nipple (plastic collar quick-connect fittings only).
  19. Attach the flexible fuel hose from the pump device to the fuel sender nipple using a screw type clamp.
  20. Drain the right tank until no fuel comes out.
  21. Disconnect the pump device from the right tank fuel sender nipple.
  22. Install the plastic connector retainer to the fuel sender nipple (plastic collar quick-connect fittings only).
  23. Plug the fuel sender nipple and the fuel sender fuel feed pipe.

  1. Remove the left fuel rail cover.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .

  3. Object Number: 43537  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the fuel return hose (4) from the fuel rail.
  5. Attach a length of flexible fuel hose to the fuel rail return pipe using a screw type clamp.
  6. Insert the other end of the flexible fuel hose into an approved drain container.
  7. Run the engine until the engine stalls.
  8. Reconnect the fuel return hose (4) to the fuel rail.
  9. Continue with this procedure if the right fuel tank still contains fuel.

  11. Position an approved drain container under the right tank fuel sender.
  12. Attach a length of flexible fuel hose to an air operated pump device.
  13. Wrap a shop towel around the fuel sender fuel feed pipe (3) (jet pump to left tank) at the right fuel sender.
  14. Disconnect the fuel sender fuel feed pipe (3) (jet pump to left tank) at the right tank fuel sender.
  15. Remove the plastic connector retainer from the fuel sender nipple (plastic collar quick-connect fittings only).
  16. Attach the flexible fuel hose from the pump device to the fuel sender nipple using a screw type clamp.
  17. Drain the right tank until no fuel comes out.
  18. Disconnect the pump device from the right tank fuel sender nipple.
  19. Install the plastic connector retainer to the fuel sender nipple (plastic collar quick-connect fittings only).
  20. Plug or cap the fuel sender nipple and the fuel sender fuel feed pipe.
