DEFINITION: The muffler rattles with or without the loss of engine power.

Inspect for a plugged catalytic converter.

Is the catalytic converter plugged?

1. Replace the intermediate pipe. Refer to Intermediate Pipe in Engine Exhaust.
2. Inspect the engine performance.

Does the muffler still rattle?

System OK

Inspect for the proper fuel.

Is the fuel leaded?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Fill the fuel tank with unleaded fuel.

Does the muffler still rattle?

Go to Step 5

System OK

Replace the muffler. Refer to Muffler in Engine Exhaust.

Are the repairs complete?
