Rear Axle Tie Rod Complete
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 42188 Ball Joint Seperator
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Disconnect the outer tie rod end from the suspension knuckle.
Refer to
Rear Axle Tie Rod
.
- Remove the nut retaining the rear axle tie rod to the crossmember.
- Remove the rear axle tie rod from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the outer tie rod end into the tie rod.
- Install the tie rod into the crossmember.
Tighten
Tighten the tie rod nut to the crossmember to 80 N·m (59 lb ft).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the outer tie rod end into the steering knuckle.
Tighten
- Tighten the outer tie rod end nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft)
to seat the tie rod stud.
- Turn the nut an additional 2½ flats.
- Check the outer tie rod end nut for a minimum torque of 30 N·m
(22 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Adjust the rear wheel toe as necessary. Refer to
Toe Adjustment
in Wheel Alignment.
Rear Axle Tie Rod Outer End
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 42188 Ball Joint
Separator
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Loosen the jam nut on the outer tie rod end.
- Loosen but do not remove the axle tie rod nut and washer.
- Separate the axle tie rod outer end from knuckle using J 42188
.
- Remove J 42188
.
- Remove the tie rod nut and tie rod outer end from the knuckle.
- Remove the axle tie rod outer end from the tie rod.
Installation Procedure
- Install the outer tie rod end onto the axle tie rod.
- Install the outer tie rod end into the knuckle.
- Install the outer tie rod end nut.
Tighten
- Tighten the outer tie rod end nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft)
to seat the outer tie rod stud.
- Turn the nut an additional 2½ flats.
- Check the outer tie rod end nut for a minimum torque of 30 N·m

- Lower the vehicle.
- Adjust the rear wheel toe as necessary and the tighten jam nut.
