1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
2. Remove the transmission oil pan and filter. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement .
3. Remove the control valve body. Refer to Valve Body and Pressure Switch Replacement .
4. Remove the 1-2 accumulator cover bolts.



5. Remove the 1-2 accumulator cover.
6. Remove the 1-2 accumulator piston.
7. Remove the piston springs.



8. Remove the spacer plate support bolts.
9. Remove the spacer plate support.



10. Remove the spacer plate and the spacer plate gaskets.



11. Remove the 3-4 accumulator piston spring, the piston, and the pin.
12. Inspect the accumulator assembly. Refer to the 1997 Transmission/Transaxle/Transfer Case Unit Repair Manual.

Tools Required:

1. Install the 3-4 accumulator pin into the transmission case.
2. Install the 3-4 accumulator piston onto the pin.

Ensure that the piston legs face away from the transmission case.

3. Install the 3-4 accumulator piston spring.



4. Install the J 25025-B to the transmission case.
5. Install the case gasket and the valve body gasket to the spacer plate.

Use the J 36850 in order to retain the gaskets to the spacer plate.

•	The case gasket is identified by a C.

•	Be sure to place the case gasket on the transmission case side of the spacer plate.

•	The valve body gasket is identified by a V.

•	Be sure to place the valve body gasket on the valve body side of the spacer plate.

6. Install the spacer plate and the gaskets to the transmission case.



7. Install the spacer plate support and the spacer plate support bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the spacer plate support bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.




8. Install the 1-2 accumulator inner and outer springs to the piston.
9. Install the 1-2 accumulator piston to the accumulator cover.

Ensure that the piston legs face the accumulator cover.




10. Install the 1-2 accumulator cover and the cover bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the 1-2 accumulator cover bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

11. Remove the J 25025-B from the transmission case.
12. Install the control valve body. Refer to Valve Body and Pressure Switch Replacement .
13. Install the transmission oil pan and filter. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Replacement .
14. Lower the vehicle.
