The transmission fluid level is low.

Inspect the transmission fluid level and add the proper fluid as necessary.

The transmission contains the incorrect type of transmission fluid.

Drain and refill the transmission with the correct type of fluid.

Refer to Transmission Oil Drain and Fill .

The transmission shift control closeout boot is loose or damaged.

1. Inspect the transmission shift control closeout boot.
2. Position and tighten the closeout boot to specifications, or replace the boot as necessary.

The rear axle differential is defective.

1. Inspect the rear axle differential.
2. Repair or replace the rear axle differential as necessary. Refer to Rear Axle Differential Replacement in Rear Drive Axle.
