Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

    in General Information.
  2. Turn the steering wheel far enough to the left to gain access to the upper coupling bolt.

  3. Object Number: 70106 Size: SH
  4. Remove the upper coupling bolt.
  5. Turn the steering wheel back to the right until the wheels are in a straight ahead position an lock the steering column.

  6. Object Number: 70108 Size: SH
  7. Remove the lower coupling shield.
  8. Remove the lower coupling retaining bolt.
  9. Remove the lower coupling from the steering gear.
  10. Slide the upper coupling from the steering column shaft.
  11. Remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 70108 Size: SH
  1. Place the intermediate shaft into vehicle.
  2. Slide the upper coupling onto the steering column shaft.
  3. Connect the lower coupling onto the steering gear.
  4. Install the lower coupling retaining bolt into the lower coupling.
  5. Tighten
Tighten the lower coupling retaining bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Object Number: 70106 Size: SH
  6. Unlock the steering column.
  7. Turn the steering wheel far enough to the left to gain access to the upper coupling bolt hole.
  8. Install the upper coupling bolt into the upper coupling.
  9. Tighten
Tighten the upper coupling bolt to 47.5 N·m (35 lb ft).

  10. Turn the steering wheel back to the right until the wheels are in a straight ahead position and lock the steering column.
  11. Install the lower steering coupling shield.
  12. Tighten
Tighten the lower steering coupling shield clamp screw to 3.4 N·m (30 lb in).

  13. Connect negative battery cable.
