Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 36541-A Steering Wheel Puller Legs
    • J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller
    • J 42120 Steering Wheel Puller Leg Set

  1. Remove the inflator module. Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint .
  2. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
  3. Install tools J 1859-A  (1) and J 36541-A  (2). If the J 36541-A puller legs do not fit into the openings, use J 42120 puller legs.
  4. Tighten the puller center screw against steering column shaft until the steering wheel slides off the steering column shaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column, observing the alignment marks (splines).
  2. Install a new steering wheel set nut.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel set nut to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Connect the horn connector.
  5. Install the inflator module. Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint .
  6. Perform SIR Diagnostic System Check. Refer to SIR Diagnostic System Check in SIR.
