Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Restraints.

  3. Object Number: 82176  Size: SH
  4. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  5. Secure the steering column to the modular column holding fixture J 41352 .
  6. Place the holding fixture into the vise.
  7. Inspect the steering shaft assembly for accidental damage.

  9. Remove the tilt the lever. Refer to Tilt Wheel Lever .
  10. Remove the two pan head tapping screws from the lower shroud.

  12. Perform the following steps to remove the lower shroud:
  13. 9.1. Tilt the shroud down.
    9.2. Slide the shroud back to disengage.

  14. Remove the torx head screw from the upper shroud.
  15. Remove the upper shroud.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 82173  Size: SH
  1. Install the upper shroud.
  2. Use the torx head screws to secure the upper shroud.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 1.4 N·m (12 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Perform the following steps to install the lower shroud:
  5. 3.1. Check that the slots on the lower shroud engage with the tabs on the upper shroud.
    3.2. Tilt the lower shroud up and snap the shrouds together.

  6. Install the two pan head tapping screws to the lower shroud.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the screws to 6.0 N·m (53 lb in).

  8. Install the tilt lever. Refer to Tilt Wheel Lever .
  9. Install the steering column to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  10. Enable the SIR system once all the service operations are completed. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraints.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Cable in Engine Electrical.
