DEFINITION: Both the rear defogger grid and the outside heated rearview mirrors are not operating when the rear defogger button is depressed. DTCs B0432, B0433, U1255 by the BCM or U1153 by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) has not been set.

  1. Start engine and allow to idle in Park.
  2. Depress the rear defogger switch.

Does the rear window defogger indicator illuminate?

Go to Step 3

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Install the scan tool and set it to read switch inputs.
  3. Start engine and allow to idle in Park.
  4. Depress the Rear Defogger switch to turn the Rear Defogger Grid ON and then OFF.

Does the scan tool display show the Rear Defogger switch input toggling ON and then OFF?

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 4

Replace the HVAC Control Head.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the BCM.

Is the repair complete?

  1. Start engine and allow to idle in Park.
  2. Depress the rear defogger switch.

Does the rear window defogger indicator illuminate?

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the HVAC Control Head connector C1.
  3. Using a DMM, measure for continuity between the HVAC Control Head connector C1 terminal D and the BCM connector C2 terminal C10.

Is CKT 681 continuous between these two connectors?

Go to Step 6

Repair the open in CKT 681.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the HVAC Control Head.
