Wander or Poor Steering Stability

Problem

Action

The front or the rear wheels are out of alignment.

  1. Check the alignment.
  2. Perform the alignment.

Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.

The rack preload is misadjusted (too loose).

Torque the rack preload to proper specifications.

Refer to Steering Gear Rack Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle in Power Steering System.

The stabilizer shaft or links are loose.

Torque the stabilizer shaft to the proper specifications.

Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Front Suspension or Fastener Tightening Specifications in Rear Suspension.

The front or rear transverse leaf spring is broken or sagging.

  1. Inspect the spring.
  2. Service as needed.

Refer to Front Transverse Spring Replacement in Front Suspension or Rear Transverse Spring Replacement in Rear Suspension.

The shocks are worn.

  1. Inspect the shock mountings.
  2. Service as needed.

Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement in Front Suspension or Shock Absorber Replacement in Rear Suspension.

The tires are uneven or misaligned.

  1. Service and/or replace tire(s) as needed.
  2. Check the alignment.
  3. Perform an alignment.
