Removal Procedure
Tools Required
• | J 33432-A Transverse
Leaf Spring Compressor and J 33432-97 Adapters. |
- Raise and support the
vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires
and Wheels.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the wheel speed sensors.
- Disconnect the real time dampening position sensor if equipped.
- Remove the transverse leaf spring from the crossmember. Refer
to
Rear Transverse Spring Replacement
.
- Disconnect the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms.
- Remove the stabilizer shaft insulator clamps.
- Remove the stabilizer shaft from the vehicle.
- Loosen the outer tie rod
end stud nuts. Do not remove the nuts.
- Install J 42188
and separate the outer tie rod end studs from the rear suspension
knuckles.
- Remove the outer tie rod end stud nuts.
- Disconnect the outer tie rod end studs from the rear suspension
knuckles.
- Disconnect the Electronic
Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM), (if in the rear) from the crossmember
and support out of the way. Refer to
Electronic Brake Control Module Replacement
in
Antilock Brake System.
- Remove the transaxle mount lower nuts. Refer to
Transmission Mount Replacement
in Rear Drive Axle.
- Support the crossmember with a transmission jack.
- Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolts from the lower
control arms.
- Loosen the lower ball joint stud nuts. Do not remove the nuts.
- Install J 42188
on the left lower control arm.
- Separate the lower ball joint stud from the suspension knuckle.
- Support the left hand lower control arm with a jack stand.
- Remove the J 42188
and install on the right hand lower control arm.
- Separate the right hand lower ball joint stud from the suspension
knuckle.
- Support the right hand lower control arm with a jack stand.
- Remove J 42188
and
the lower ball joint stud nuts.
- Remove the jack stands from the lower control arms.
- Disconnect the lower control arms from the rear suspension knuckles.
- Rotate the steering knuckles backwards until the drive axle clears
the differential. Refer to
Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement
in Rear Drive Axle.
- Support the drive axles and the rear suspension knuckles.
- Disconnect all the electrical connectors from the crossmember.
- Disconnect the brake lines from the crossmember.
- Support the transaxle under the transmission pan with a transmission
jack.
- Remove the rear crossmember mounting nuts.
- Remove the crossmember from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the crossmember to the vehicle.
• | Align the crossmember dowel pins to the holes in the frame rails. |
• | Align the transaxle mount studs to the crossmember. |
- Connect all electrical connectors to the crossmember.
- Connect the brake lines to the crossmember.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install new rear
suspension crossmember mounting nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the new rear crossmember mounting bolts to 110 N·m
(81 lb ft).
- Remove the transmission jack from the crossmember.
- Install the transaxle mount lower nuts. Refer to
Transmission Mount Replacement
in Rear Drive Axle.
- Install the inner cv joints into the differential. Refer to
Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement
in
Rear Drive Axle.
- Install the rear suspension knuckles onto the lower control arms.
- Support the lower control arms with jack stands.
Tighten
- Tighten the ball joint stud nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft)
to seat the ball joint stud.
- Turn the nut an additional 210 degrees.
- Check the ball joint stud nut for a minimum final torque of 70 N·m
(52 lb ft).
- Install the shock absorbers
to the lower control arms.
Tighten
Tighten the shock absorber lower mounting bolts to 220 N·m
(162 lb ft).
- Install the outer tie
rod studs into the rear suspension knuckles.
Tighten
- Tighten the ball joint stud nut to 20 N·m (15 lb ft)
to seat the ball joint stud.
- Turn the nut an additional 160 degrees.
- inspect the ball joint stud nut for a minimum final torque of
45 N·m (33 lb ft).
- Install the stabilizer
shaft to the crossmember.
Tighten
• | Tighten the upper stabilizer shaft insulator clamp bolts to 65 N·m
(49 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the lower stabilizer shaft insulator clamp nuts to 95 N·m
(70 lb ft). |
- Install the stabilizer shaft links to the lower control arms.
Tighten
Tighten the stabilizer shaft link nuts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).
- Remove the jack stands
from under the lower control arms.
- Install the transverse leaf spring to the crossmember, use the
installation procedure steps (1) thru (6). Refer to
Rear Transverse Spring Replacement
.
- Connect the Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (if in the
rear) to the crossmember. Refer to
Electronic Brake Control Module Replacement
in
Antilock Brake System.
- Connect the electrical connectors to the wheel speed sensors.
- Set the spring stud height (1) to the measurement taken before removal.
- Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires
and Wheels.
- Remove the pole jack from the transaxle.
- Lower the vehicle.
