Problem

Action

The column is not aligned correctly.

  1. Check the following:
  2. • Check the column alignment.
    • Check the mounting.
    • Check the bearings.
  3. Adjust, repair and/or replace as needed.
  4. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

The horn contact ring is not lubricated.

  1. Inspect the horn contact ring.
  2. Service the horn contact ring as needed.

Refer to Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle .

The joints from the column to the steering gear are loose.

  1. Check for correct torque.
  2. Replace components as needed.

Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .

A lack of grease on the bearings.

  1. Inspect the bearings.
  2. Lubricate the bearings with lithium grease.

Refer to Turn Signal Cancel Cam and Upper Bearing Inner Race Replacement - Off Vehicle .

The lower or the upper steering shaft bearing is worn or broken.

Inspect and/or replace as needed.

Refer to Lower Steering Shaft Assembly.

The shaft lock retaining ring is not seated.

  1. Inspect the shaft lock retaining ring.
  2. Firmly seat the shaft lock retaining ring into the groove on the shaft.

The spherical joint is not lubricated.

  1. Inspect the spherical joint.
  2. Lubricate the spherical joint with lithium grease.
