Popping from Under Front of Vehicle

Problem

Popping sound when making a turn.

Possible Cause

The steering rack inner tie rod end lacks lubricant.

Correction

  1. Warm up the vehicle by driving 3 or 4 miles. Perform low speed turns and listen for a popping sound.
  2. Remove the steering rack boot retainer and slide the boot down the shaft to expose the inner joint.
  3. Lubricate the inner joint and reposition the boot.

Clunk from Under Front of Vehicle

Problem

Clunk from the front suspension when starting and/or stopping.

Possible Cause

Lower control arm nuts not properly torqued.

Correction

  1. Road test and brake to a stop. Reverse direction and brake to a stop. Listen for clunk.
  2. Hold the lower control arm bolt head to prevent changing alignment and torque the nut to specifications.

Chatter from Under Rear of Vehicle

Problem

Chatter from under the rear of the vehicle on tight turns.

Possible Cause

The axle is low on fluid.

Correction

  1. Road test the vehicle in a parking lot making slow speed tight turns. Listen for the chatter.
  2. Drain and refill the axle with the correct lubricant and the correct amount of fiction modifier.

Rattle from Under Rear of Vehicle

Problem

Rattle from under rear of the vehicle from the exhaust hanger.

Possible Cause

The exhaust muffler blade moves inside the rear hanger.

Correction

Lubricate the rubber mount with a petroleum free lubricant in the area of contact.

Problem

Rattle from under the rear of the vehicle

Possible Cause

The transmission mount has an internal rattle.

Correction

Replace the transmission mount.

Rattle from Fuel Tank


Object Number: 384430  Size: SH

Problem

Rattle sounding like a loose part knocking against another part. Rattle could sound like its coming from the quarter panels.

Possible Cause

Slight movements of the fuel tank are not insulated from the intermediate body panel.

Correction

  1. Road test and listen for rattle. Place a hand on the intermediate panel and feel for the tank contacting the panel.
  2. Remove the fuel tank retention straps.
  3. Lower the tank slightly and support the tank.
  4. Cut a piece of 7 mm (1/4 in) thick closed cell foam to the following dimensions.
  5. • 60 m (2.5 in) wide.
    • 185 m (7.25 in) long.
  6. Glue the piece of foam vertically to the surface of the tank just below the handle.
  7. Use a long screwdriver or other tool to help slide the foam piece up into position.

  8. Install the fuel tank straps. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement or Fuel Tank Replacement or Fuel Tank Replacement or Fuel Tank Replacement .

Rolling Sound from Under Vehicle

Problem

Rolling sound from under the vehicle when performing abrupt driving maneuvers.

Possible Cause

There is a portion of a replaced rivet nut or other metal object in a frame rail.

Correction

  1. Raise the vehicle and hit the frame rails with a metal hammer while listening for a jingle.
  2. Securely attach a magnet to a wire.
  3. Insert the magnet on a wire through a tie down slot or other opening and remove object from the frame.

Slap from Under Rear of Vehicle


Object Number: 180566  Size: SH

Problem

Slap or rattle from under the rear of the vehicle when driving over bumps in the road.

Possible Cause

The parking brake cable(s) is/are hitting the rear compartment floor or frame rail outboard of the retaining clip.

Correction

  1. Road test over bumps and/or raise the vehicle and tap on the cables and listen for slap sound.
  2. Install foam tape to the floor or frame rail at the point of the cable contact.
