In February, 1999, a new service bulletin numbering system was introduced. This bulletin is being issued to assist you in properly filing bulletins under the new system. The information below applies only to printed bulletins. The current format of service bulletins will remain the same. You may receive bulletins under the following categories:

    • Technical
    • Information
    • Service Manual Update
    • Exchange Program
    • Warranty Administration
    • OBD Software Upgrade
    • Campaign
    • Special Policy

How to File GM Service Bulletins

GM Service Bulletins should be filed in GM Service Bulletin binders. Each bulletin has a section name and number printed at the top right corner. This section name will match one of the tabs in the binder. We recommend that Service Bulletins be filed behind the tab that matches the section title shown on the bulletin, and then by the subsection in sequential order.

GM Service Bulletin Number Structure

Sample Number: 99-06-03-007

Beginning January 1999, Service Bulletins will be numbered within four groups separated by dashes. The first two groups are two digits, the third group could be two or three digits, and the fourth will contain a three digit sequence number. The following is a breakdown of the sample number printed above.

    • 1st pair: 99
       - Calendar year when originally written
       - The number will retain two digits for the model year 2000 and after.
    • 2nd pair: 06
       - Section Number: 06 refers to Engine.
       - See table for a complete list of section numbers.
    • 3rd pair: 03
       - Subsection Number: 03 refers to Engine Electrical
       - See table for a complete list of subsection numbers.
    • 4th group: 007
       - Sequence number of bulletin within the subsection.
       - If a Service Bulletin is revised for any reason, its number will remain the same and a letter will be added to identify the revision status (example: 99-06-03-007A). In addition, a revision statement at the beginning of the bulletin will explain the changes made and identify the bulletin that is to be discarded when the revised bulletin is filed.
