Subject: | Service VME -- Concerns Related to Improperly Checking Engine Oil Level |
Models: | SERVICE VME |
When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.
The correct engine oil fill when changing the engine oil and oil filter is 6 1/2 quarts. The owners manual states to achieve a proper oil level reading the oil should be warm and the vehicle should be parked on level ground. Turn the engine off and allow a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan. Performing these steps every time will provide the most accurate oil level reading. The proper engine oil level on either an LS1 or LS6 after changing the oil and filter and installing 6 1/2 quarts of oil will be the oil level indicated on the engine oil dipstick. This level will be somewhere between the bottom "ADD" mark and the upper "operating range" mark. The oil level will not necessarily be at the upper "operating range" mark. The fact that the oil level may not be at the upper "operating range" mark does not indicate a problem and does not mean that additional oil needs to be added to the engine. The oil level that is achieved after changing the oil and filter, installing 6 1/2 quarts of oil and then following the above oil level checking procedure should be considered the "full" level for that engine. Adding additional oil to the engine to bring the indicated oil level to the upper "operating range" mark may result in accelerated consumption of this "overfilled" amount of oil.
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance.
