Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 74223  Size: SH
  1. Open the hood.
  2. Remove the oil fill cap.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the oil pan drain plug.
  5. Drain the engine oil into an appropriate container.
  6. Allow sufficient time for the oil to drain.

  7. Remove the engine oil filter from the engine block.
  8. Important: Check the old oil filter to ensure that the filter seal is not left on the engine block.

  9. Empty the oil filter into the drain pan.
  10. Allow sufficient time for the oil to drain from the oil filter opening.
  11. Wipe the excess oil from the oil filter mounting.

Installation Procedure

  1. Wipe any excess oil from the oil filter mounting.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: Lightly oil the engine oil filter gasket, using CLEAN oil.

  3. Install the oil filter to the engine block.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the engine oil filter to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  5. Wipe any excess oil from the oil pan drain hole.
  6. Install the oil pan drain plug.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pan drain plug to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Important: DO NOT use any engine oil additives in Corvette engines.

  10. Fill the engine with the appropriate amount and type of engine oil. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities and Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  11. Run the engine for 3 minutes.
  12. Raise the vehicle.
  13. Thoroughly inspect the oil filter and the oil pan drain plug areas for leaks.
  14. Allow the engine to cool for a minimum of 3 minutes.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Check the engine oil level.
  17. Top-off the engine oil to the full mark on the oil level indicator (dipstick), if necessary.
  18. Install the oil fill cap.
  19. Close the hood.
  20. Reset the engine oil life monitor. Refer to GM Oil Life System Resetting in Maintenance and Lubrication.
