Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 663696  Size: SH
  1. Remove the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) bracket. Refer to Brake Pressure Modulator Valve Bracket Replacement in Antilock Brake System.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  5. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt from the power steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  6. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the crossmember. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
  7. Remove the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement .
  8. Remove the power steering return hose from the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Return Hose Replacement .
  9. Remove the electrical connectors from the crossmember.
  10. Remove the brake pipes from the crossmember.
  11. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts (3) and nuts (2).
  12. Using hand tools only, LOOSEN, Do Not Remove, the four crossmember mounting nuts 10 mm (0.394 inch).
  13. Remove the power steering gear (1) from the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear (1) into the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts (3) and nuts (2).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  5. Install the crossmember mounting nuts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts, using hand tools only, to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  7. Install the brake pipes to the crossmember.
  8. Install the electrical connectors to the crossmember.
  9. Install the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement .
  10. Install the power steering return hose to the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Return Hose Replacement .
  11. Install the stabilizer shaft to the crossmember. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
  12. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to the power steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  13. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  14. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) bracket. Refer to Brake Pressure Modulator Valve Bracket Replacement in Antilock Brake System.
  17. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  18. Adjust the front wheel toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
